Nightingale Theatre

Dr Faustus

Sound design for Marlowe's Dr Faustus at the Nightingale Theatre.

  • Sound Designer

Faustus ends on a clock. The last scene is written against the hour striking towards midnight, which makes the sound part of the dramaturgy rather than a layer laid over it — the audience has to feel time being spent, at the rate the verse spends it.

A sound design credit without a composing credit is its own discipline. Everything has to be built out of what the play already proposes, and nothing can be solved by writing a tune over the top of it.
