A festival slot is an unforgiving brief for sound. The get-in is short, the room is a hall rather than a house built for plays, and everything has to be rigged, levelled and running inside an afternoon — so a design that only works once it has been tuned for a week is no use.
The score was written for the same staging, which is what lets the music and the design agree about how large the room is meant to sound.
