The Alchemist is a con run at speed: a house borrowed while its owner is out of plague-struck London, a queue of gulls at the door, and a scheme that has to keep moving or fall over. Underscoring a comedy built on that kind of momentum is mostly a question of where not to play — music that fills a scene change is also music the next knock at the door has to cut through.
